International Day of Older Persons: 1 in 5 Belgians over 60 is keen on a younger partner.

Belgian over-sixties don’t waste any time in their search for love. The results of a survey we conducted in light of the International Day of Older Persons shows that seniors prefer to go on a date as quickly as possible to get to know their potential partner. If that makes you think the over-60s aren’t picky when it comes to love, you’re dead wrong. Turns out age is pretty important for the elderly, as they seem to prefer a younger partner.

Meeting up right away

Over-60s don’t have any time to waste in love. This older generation ventures more and more into online dating. To get to know their potential partner however, they seem to prefer meeting up face-to-face. More than one in three (36%) of over-60s say they want to meet their online match right away when a profile sparks their interest, skipping the days, weeks or even months of online chatting.

Surprisingly, the younger generation takes more time before meeting up face-to-face with a potential partner. Even more so, the younger they are, the longer they put off going on a first date. One in four (26%) Belgians between 30 and 40 prefers chatting online for a few weeks before meeting up with their match, for those between 18 and 24 years old the percentage is even at 41%.

Over-60s prefer a younger partner

The older generation clearly does not burn any daylight. This doesn’t mean however that they aren’t picky. Belgian over-60s attach more importance to their partner’s age than younger generations. About half (49%) of Belgian elderly think age difference plays a role in a relationship. The generation of 30- and 40-year-olds doesn’t attach importance to this (65%).

On top of that, over-60s prefer being the oldest in the relationship more often than younger generations. Almost a quarter (24%) prefers a younger partner. Among 25- to 30-year-olds, only 9.5% is open to having a younger partner. Among 18- to 24-year-olds this is even only 5%. Also remarkable: only 2% of the over-60s wants an older partner.
